O for Obese

A few of my posts have highlighted the fact I struggle with my weight. I often flip between hating my size and telling myself I'm going to be really good to thinking 'why should I care what other people think? I'm happy as I am'.
The truth is..I am happy how I am. The main reason I'd like to shed a few pounds is more health related than anything else. According to my BMI I'm obese and due to the fact this could have a lot of repercussions as I get older it's something I'd like to have more control of before it should really be a problem.
But I do find all the effort hard work. Especially as a student. Fresh fruit and vegetables cost a lot of money and after a long day I want quick and convenient. Hopefully if I remind myself how much smaller I was not all that long ago it'll help me with not grabbing a ready meal or takeaway quite so often.
Tell me what your solutions to eating the right food are and what are your favourites?

  1. Hiya,

I was one of those people who slowly gained weight a couple of pounds a year for many years until suddenly one day I went oops what happened?

Actually that moment was after I had to fill out a health questionnaire for my current job, it asked for weight and I had no idea, knew I'd put weight on and made a guess on what I thought was the heavy side, then got curious, found someone who owned a set of scales, weighed myself and I was another half a stone plus on what I guestimated.

Did something about it, changed eating habits, did some more exercise (nothing drastic) and slowly lost just over 2 stone over a full year. Now I'm an ideal BMI and much happier in my health/shape.

My biggest success was portion control... I had no idea what it was but when I did find out I discovered I was seriously overeating. I also didn't have a clue about calorie content/fat content etc so learnt about all that too and ate a calorie controlled but nutrionally balanced diet, I like gadgets so ignored the suggested meals and ate what I normally ate but balanced it with a gadget for fat/protein/calories etc etc each day/week.

Now I eat breakfast (never used to touch it before), drink a lot more water, and watch portion sizes. I didn't radically alter what I ate as the variety in my diet wasn't too bad to start with, it was the amount I ate. That was the reason I took the weight loss so slow, as although I could have lost it faster I was trying to learn new habits and you can't do that quickly if you want them to stick for life.

I switched my usual very calorific beers to white wine or gin & tonic, if I had a sweet craving, I'd slice up one banana, add 2 teaspoons of honey and bake this for 10 mins in a 180oC oven, comes out sickly sweet and making/waiting for it took my mind off the craving.

In my job I can sometimes be driving around all day, nightmare time for having to use a garage for lunch (and be eating way too late), previously I'd grab any sandwich, a coke and a packet of crisps/chocolate around 4pm. Now it's a healthy/lowest calorie sandwich from the garage (too lazy to make my own) and an apple from home and a bottle of water, buy the sandwich on my way out of town and eat lunch at lunchtime!

Sorry this is a very loooonnnnnnnnggggggg reply to your A to Z post, but something that I did fairly recently (achieved Oct 2012 and have maintained at -2lb/+4lb to original target which is a range I'm happy with) so still very proud!

P.S. and it did also start with the 9lb I put on in 10 weeks, in my first term of Uni all those years ago, after that 9lb I added another 2 stone over the years. Stealth Fat!

    1. Wow that comment was even longer than my post!
Aha. Since writing this post aswell my grandad has been in hospital with heart problems so my weight has even more so been at the front of my mind.
I've read somewhere that it take 21 days to make something a habit so hopefully in 21 days I may have got myself into a healthier routine and maybe in a couple of years I'll be a couple of stone lighter!

    2. Sorry to hear about your grandad, wishing him a safe recovery xx

Lol I must take longer to form my habits I think ;) I think the secret is really to eat food you like, but have everything in moderation and swap out some of the higher calorie stuff for lower, as long as it's not boring or dull. Eating should be pleasurable and fun not a prison sentence, and it's finding what you love to eat that's a good balance for you health wise.

Trend wise I found I was swimming against the tide a bit, there was so much pressure to lose X in Y days, why is it taking so long, I'm doing "Z" plan blah, blah, blah. I just wanted to do it in my own time, my own way and if you can find your way then go you! :)

      Best of luck
      Mars xx
